Naturally Heal Your Hair with Coconut Oil Interview with Dr. Bruce Fife Interviewed by Raena Morgan January 20, 2009
Raena Morgan: Does coconut oil have benefits for hair? Can you use it on your hair and get some improvement?
Dr. Bruce Fife: Actually, that’s one of the traditional uses in the tropics, in India and these places—they put it in their hair and it helps with the hair health. There have actually even been studies on this where they’ve compared coconut oil to other oils on hair health, and the coconut oil is superior to these other oils. And, it’s because, again, of the medium chain fatty acids [that] have an affect on the hair shaft that makes it healthier.
RM: Does it affect hair loss?
BF: Some people have mentioned that but I have not actually seen much benefit.
RM: I have to fuss a lot to get what I achieve everyday. Okay, so it acts like a conditioner in other words.
BF: Yes.
RM: So, do you put it in your hair and leave it or do you wash it out like a shampoo?
BF: You put it in and you let it sit for a few minutes—it could be 15 minutes, a half hour, and then you wash it out. Another benefit of doing this with coconut oil is [that] it gets rid of dandruff.
RM: Oh, it does?!
BF: It’s an excellent anti-dandruff product as well.
RM: Without having to dry your scalp out. That’s what dandruff is, it dries the scalp out? Okay. So, it’s not harsh.
BF: Right.
RM: Great. Thank you.
