Scott: Doctor, we talk about acid and alkaline. Why is pH balance so important in the body?

Dr. David Brant: Well, for some of the reasons that I just mentioned, but typically, diseased states in our body often will progress in a more acidic environment. If you're more alkaline everything works better, your enzyme systems work better, your hormone systems work better. When you get into a more acidic environment, that basically stresses your body and those systems can become bad for you rather than good for you.

Scott: How do our bodies become acidic? We talked about lactic acid a little bit from workouts, but there are a number of ways where we can throw off that balance.

Dr. David Brant: One of the primary ways is with our western-style diet that is heavy with meat products, animal products, and dairy products. Soda-pop, which has citric acid in it as a preservative so they've got a good shelf life, that citric acid is damaging to us as well. One can of 12-ounce pop will have enough acid in it that you'd have to drink 32 12-ounce cans of water to neutralize the acid that you got from that pop.

Alka-Plex neutralizes that before you drink it. Go out and eat spicy pizza on Friday night with your friends, and you can sprinkle Alka-Plex on the pizza and that will neutralize the acid that you're going to develop anyway. It's great for acid reflux situations and GERD situations and those types of things. The product itself is tasteless and odorless so it's not going to change the taste of your food.
