Dr. Mark Whitacre has a long history as an executive in the biotechnology industry. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer for Technology and Business Development at Cypress Systems, Inc in Pensacola, Florida. His position at Cypress Systems, Inc. brings him full circle, as he continues the work he began during his doctoral years at Cornell University. Dr. Whitacre studied under Dr. G.F. Combs, Jr., a leading selenium researcher who discovered selenium nutritional supplements can reduce the risk cancer in humans.
Dr. Whitacre attended the Ohio State University at Columbus, Ohio, where he received his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in animal nutrition. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Nutritional Biochemistry. While at Cornell University, Dr. Whitacre also earned minors in biochemistry and international nutrition. His Ph.D. dissertation research was studying the biochemical role of selenium in the pancreas. Dr. Whitacre has continued to further his education after his years at Cornell University. He obtained a Juris Doctor and L.L.M. law degrees from Northwestern California University in Sacramento, California. He also received his Master of Business Administration, his first Juris Doctor degree, and Ph.D. degrees in Psychology and Economics from Kensington University in Glendale, California.
Dr. Whitacre has nearly two decades of top management experience; most of his top management experience was obtained at Fortune 500 companies and leading entrepreneurial companies. He has spent most of his career in the area of biotechnology and microbial fermentation.
