Hi and welcome to this week’s look at natural news headlines on iHealthtube dot com…
Most of us know that sugar is not good for our overall health… and that one of the biggest sources of the almost 11 metric tons that Americans consumed last year was from sweetened drinks like soda and sports drinks. Recently researchers using the Framingham Heart Study found that people who frequently drink those kinds of beverages are more likely to have poorer memory and smaller overall brain volume.
However diet sodas don’t appear to be a good alternative… a follow- up study found that people who drink diet today daily were almost three times as likely to develop stroke and dementia than those who did not. Researchers are however, quick to point out that more research is needed to determine how or if those types of drinks actually cause the damage to the brain and how much might be caused by other underlying conditions.
If you enjoy a steak, some chicken or other animal protein on a regular basis… you could be setting yourself up for some health issues according to a recent study.
The study out of Amsterdam found that a diet high in animal protein was linked with a higher risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The condition is a major health concern because it can lead to cirrhosis… cancer and other liver issues. The study supported the theory that a diet rich in animal proteins and refined foods may cause disturbances to the body’s homeostasis, among other things…
How do you get to work? Does it matter? Well… new research out of Scotland indicates that it does make a big difference.
The study out of the University of Glasgow found that compared to non-active commuters… riding a bike to work was linked to a 45 percent lower risk of cancer and a 46 percent lower risk of heart disease… Over a quarter million people were surveyed over a 5 year period for the study… It also found that walking to work was linked to a lower risk of heart disease… but unlike cycling… was not associated with a significantly lower risk of cancer or overall death.
