Interviewer:  Obesity has been a problem in this country for a long time. It's now officially a disease and I think that was declared earlier this year.

Dr. Murray: Right.

Interviewer: What does that do? That declaration? What does that do going forward?

Dr. Murray: It's just a way for the drug companies to make more money. I really believe that. It was really more of a way to manage healthcare costs and get some reimbursements and create categories. I'll give you another category that was recently developed. It's called mild cognitive impairment. And it was developed to be the gap between age related mental decline and Alzheimer's disease or dementia. And so the reason it was developed was that the drugs that weren't working for Alzheimer's disease, they thought "oh, we'll market these for mild cognitive impairment." Well, guess what? They've now done eight double blind studies with these so- called cognitive enhancers, these drugs. And what the studies showed was that they didn't work. So what does work to improve brain function? Nutrition. Diet. And proper supplementation. There are a number of very important dietary factors and nutritional supplements that can help people keep their wits longer. Can help improve mental function and I'm hoping that the shortcomings of the drugs for mild cognitive impairment will open the door for many people to start making a trip down to their local health food store and learning how to utilize these natural products to support their brain chemistry. Our brain utilizes about 30 to 40 percent of all the nutrition we consume. So if we feed our brain better, it's going to function better.

Interviewer: What are some of those products, for instance?

Dr. Murray: Something as simple as B Vitamins. Oxford University did a very important study where they looked at just three B Vitamins: B12, B6, and folic acid. And they found that those three B Vitamins enhanced mental function in people with mild cognitive impairment. I think taking a good high potency multiple vitamins and mineral formula provides really good nutritional insurance. You're getting all those important vitamins and minerals. Those are essential nutrients that we need to provide our body on a daily basis. Fish oils. Taking fish oils is very important. EPA and DHA, these long chain Omega 3 fatty acids that are in fish oils are critical for proper brain function. And low levels are associated not only with mild cognitive impairment but also mood disorders like depression and anxiety. So make sure you get a good high quality fish oil. Take enough of that fish oil to provide 1,000 mg of EPA and DHA each day is very important. Next, flavonoid rich products, berries, extracts like grape seed extract or pine bark extract. Very important to brain health and brain function. And there are a long list of special nutritional compounds. I like phosphatidylserine for age related mental decline. If you're having a hard time remembering people's names or what you had for breakfast, you know? Think about taking PS. If you're having problems with your memory, write that down right now so you won't forget. It's PS, it's short for phosphatidylserine and a number of double blind, well done studies have shown that it can improve mental functioning in people suffering from age related mental decline. 100 mg three times a day. Very simple recommendation. What I like about it is that people will feel it. They will get the results, they'll notice a difference. But I always like to have the foundation taken care of first. I think a lot of these natural designed for specific indications, they fail sometimes because people are lacking in the foundations of the high potency, multiple, good pharmaceutical grade fish oil product. And then taking a flavonoid rich extract or some other plant based antioxidant. I recommend that for everyone.

Dr. Michael Murray discusses a class of drugs that proved largely ineffective for their intended purpose. These drugs were then marketed for a new condition that was created by the pharmaceutical industry. But Dr. Murray explains there are more natural and safe ways to treat this condition!
